The AI4Dev 2020 Challenge is now open to application. This is a challenge that involves leveraging technology to achieve UN SDGs. It is open to receive ideas for innovative AI integrated solutions that help in achieving one of the United Nation’s selected SDGs.

About AI4Dev 2020 Challenge

AI for Development (Ai4Dev) is a challenge that aims to identify great ideas on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and utilize its impact on 4 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Arab & African states.

It is organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and facilitated by NilePreneurs, in partnership with UN Agencies and other local and international organisations.

With this challenge, AI4Dev is targeting AI integrated solutions for one of the below United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

• Wasting less food
• Achieving food security and improved nutrition
• Promoting sustainable agriculture.

Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-being

Help in:

• Ensuring healthy lives
• Promoting well-being for all at all ages.

Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth

Help in:

• Creating job opportunities for youth
• Promoting sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth
• Promoting full and productive employment and decent work for all.

Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Help in:

• Fostering innovation
• Building resilient infrastructure
• Promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization

AI4Dev 2020 Challenge Prizes

Basically, if you can innovatively provide a solution for one of the above targeted SDGs; your idea will be selected to receive mentorship and training from experts in the field. Also, you will receive guidance in developing prototypes and exposure while presenting to industry experts, in the attendance of representatives from the UN, and multinational organisations.

In addition, 4 winners will be granted prizes valued as follows;

1. 1st Place Winner – 5K USD
2. 2nd Place Winner – 3K USD
3. 3nd Place Winner – 2K USD
4. 4th Place Winner – 2K USD

Selection Criteria

Are you wondering if you have what it takes to be a part of the change and become acknowledged by ITU as an emerging innovator in the Arab & African states? You must meet these criteria;

1. Problem Relevance; Your idea relate to at least one of the four stated tracks of SDGs and applies to at least the country of submission
2. Solution Urgency; Your product is needed urgently and can impact vulnerable groups and beneficiaries
3. Solution Scalability; The solution you are offering is scalable with minimal investments needed in new geolocations?
4. Team Requirements; You have a diverse team of not less than 2 with at least 1 female member and have the business and technical skills to move forward with your idea. If you do not have, you can team up on the platform.
5. Use of AI; AI should be the core of your idea and be used innovatively as an integral part of the solution.
6. Data Acquisition; The data plan is sufficient to sustain your model and know how to acquire needed data

Application Process

To create an impactful AI solution with ITU, you will pass through this 5 Milestones;

1. Application: Provide information about yourself and your team as well as a brief about your idea.
2. Selection: Evaluation and shortlisting of applications according to the evaluation metric.
3. Challenge: The applicants will receive different types of technical and business support from experts in the field.
4. Judging: Evaluation of applicant’s ideas and prototypes by Judges, shortlisting, and choosing winners according to criteria.
5. The ceremony: Notification of winners and announcement of prizes in a virtual ceremony.
