The Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy has announced the approval of Digital Identity for IDPs – Internally Displaced Persons; and Center for Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship by the FG.

This information was made open on Wednesday after Dr. Isa Pantami, Minister of the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy presented memos on a draft on the above subject matter at the Federal Executive Council on November 11, 2020.

The memos include the implementation of the national digital economy policy of a Digital Identity for IDPs in Nigeria; and a request for the construction of a Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre. And, the two were approved.

According to the release, “Digital identity is a key requirement for the development of a sustainable digital economy and it is necessary to ensure that every strata of society is able to conveniently obtain Digital IDs, including the IDPs. The policy seeks to integrate IDPs, regardless of the challenges they face, such as lack of documentation and vulnerability.”

Suffice to say, from the Tracking matrix, millions of citizens across the 36 states of the federation fall under the IDP category. So, “A Digital ID will enable the IDPs to access public, private and humanitarian services and it will also improve internal security” – Dr. Pantami

How The Policy On Digital Identity For IDPs Will Work

Basically, digital innovation will serve as a platform for creating employment for a large number of Nigerian and will support the development of the economy.

“The centre will provide facilities to nurture new ideas and focus on the promotion and development of emerging technologies. It will also support the implementation of the MIT Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program (MIT-REAP); a program led by Dr. Pantami. The centre will support the job creation objective of the FG and will be situated in Abuja.

The two projects will be supervised by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy. While, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) will implement the policy; and, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) will manage the centre based on the policy as formulated by the Minister.
