Education Beyond Schooling: Why Going To School Won’t Make You Successful

Do not get it twisted. Education is never fully gotten in the four walls of a classroom. In fact, what many of us got in the classroom was old information, repetitions, and probably theorems that are not applicable in real-life situations.

For instance, I studied Chemical Engineering for five years. Five good years! And since I left school, I have not yet made use of my Dy/Dx formula.

The real education that will help you in life is gotten through daily interactions with people. It is gotten through street knowledge. It is gotten through personal study of relevant and time-bound information hidden in books or on the internet. Education is that piece of knowledge/information which advances your mind, challenges your potentials, and gives you important information.

In other words, you can be very educated without going through the four walls of a university. You could also go to school and still be uneducated. It all depends on how much you develop your human mind. Yes, merely swallowing a piece of probably irrelevant syllabus put together by some people you do not know, is not what will get you educated.

This is why going to school is not a guarantee you will be successful. But wait a minute. The fact that Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard and went on to become very successful does not mean that dropping out of school is the route to success either. Their success became a reality because they committed themselves to continuous learning.

Just like Bill and Mark, successful people don’t allow themselves to be limited by the knowledge gained within the four walls of an institution. They learn more, outside and beyond the scope of traditional learning methods.

I have a senior friend for instance who never went to a university but can talk on any topic of interest. He speaks better English and writes better than some Nigerian graduates. He has worked with core government parastatals and is currently doing very well.

How did he develop himself? From the time I got to know him till now, he reads two Nigerian Newspapers every day. The knowledge garnered from that alone would have gotten even a dummy educated.

I also read of how Chief Afe Babalola studied by himself and passed his GCE A’levels. He even went on to earn an Economics degree by correspondence before he studied law eventually.

This is just one out of many individuals who got educated outside the traditional classroom and still became something in life.

Education is all about getting the right information and applying it to solve real life problems in real life situations. If schooling were all that was needed to succeed, why are there still so many intelligent graduates roaming the street?

Beyond schooling, here are 3 things you need to succeed in life

Timely information

You need good information to know what to do, if and when to invest, how to bake, how to speak at a conference etc. These things aren’t taught in regular schools. But if gotten and converted to solutions, they are what will bring wealth and put food on your table. You have to go look for them in books, in conferences, workshops, and seminars.

Smartness

Being smart doesn’t mean getting involved in shady deals. It simply means knowing where to look, what to do, the right people to meet, and the right way to go about things. Being smart means being people friendly. It means being street sensitive. Smartness means being ready to take on any task with confidence. It means asking the right questions.

The God factor

For every human being on earth, your life is connected to a higher being who made you and knows what you are capable of doing. Connecting to that source isn’t only smart but wise as well. It is only God that can give true success.

In conclusion, go to school. But beyond schooling, get educated. Because going to school will only get you schooled! Only a continuous commitment to learning gets you educated.
