Passion is important as you start your business, but what if you are losing passion? What if you don’t have passion? How do you avoid the passion trap? In this article, we will look at passion and the limitations of passion in entrepreneurship.

I hear many motivational speakers talk about passion; the need to have passion for what you do. They emphasize that a lack of passion will deter you from staying true to your vision. And I wonder, isn’t there supposed to be a business for the ‘passionless’. I digressed. Let’s get back on track.

When you do what you love, it makes you love work because it does not feel like work. However, passion can fade if it becomes a chore. Sometimes, doing what you love daily can make it become a routine.

Therefore, in following your passion, make sure that what you choose to do is something you enjoy doing. There have been many things that I was passionate about that I do not enjoy doing anymore.

Don’t Build A Business Around Every Passion

It is not every skill that you should build a business off of. Keep some passions separate from your work and at the end of the day, you will discover new passions that you never knew about. In a previous article, we looked at how to identify your most marketable skills so you can build a business around them. The article will show you the steps to identify the skills you have not paid attention to. Get the article here.

When I started ReDahlia, I loved to write (writing business articles on entrepreneurs.ng daily), but I have now discovered that writing daily disrupts my focus on the main goal of ReDahlia. I have to develop other passions like teaching, selling, marketing, building relationships and leadership to mention a few.

At the onset, I just wanted to put out good business content that will help business owners. I did not know that I will be publishing books, running a co-working space, building a platform for entrepreneurs, raising new business owners and doing some of the other stuff I do daily.

Recently, I picked up writing again because of my mission to democratize business knowledge. I want everyone on the surface of the earth who wants to access business knowledge to be able to do that without difficulty. I had to work around my passion and build a solid business around it. Not many people can do that; that’s why you should be careful.

I will take you through the limitations of passion in entrepreneurship so you will understand what I’m saying. Today’s teachings are going to be precise. And if you are struggling with your passion, come to the Start Your Business in 30 Days Program. How to avoid the traps of passion is part of what we teach at the academy. The beauty is that you will be learning alongside other entrepreneurs, so you won’t feel alone.

Limitations of Passion In Entrepreneurship

Here’s why YOU should not solely focus on passion:

Passion Can Fade

Passion can be a strong motivator, but it’s not immune to change. What you are passionate about today may not hold the same allure tomorrow. As you engage in your passion daily, it may turn into a routine or even a chore, leading to a decline in motivation and enthusiasm.

Not Every Passion is Marketable

While your passions may bring you joy, not all of them are viable as a business idea. Some passions may not align with market demand or may lack a sustainable business model. It is crucial to assess whether your passion can translate into a viable business venture.

The Importance of Balance

Building a business requires a diverse skill set, and solely relying on your passion may not be sufficient. You need a blend of skills like marketing, sales, financial management, and leadership to run a successful enterprise. Keep some passions separate from your business pursuits to ensure you have a balanced approach.

Discover New Passions Along the Way

As you embark on your entrepreneurial journey, you’ll likely discover new passions and interests that you never knew you had. Be open to exploring these new avenues and consider how they can complement your business endeavors.

The key takeaway here is that you want to be able to do what you love when starting your business. But recognize, that if you are doing that every day, you might lose the passion for it and it, therefore, helps to have and be open to other passions you can actively pursue.

Simply, be open to exploring new passions that will come along the way.
