Dream Wide Awake – What Does Your Dream Look Like?

What does your dream look like?

One of the things I enjoy doing as a speaker is to ask people to tell me what they want more than anything at the moment. The answers usually fall within the scope of material things – either money or a car or food or something that can be bought with money. Only once so far have I met a woman who said to me: “I could use a hug right now.” I promptly gave her one, and she smiled till the end of the session.

Most people can describe their dream lives with amazing detail. If I asked you right now to tell me your dream house/car/vacation spot/area of residence/spouse/job, you probably wouldn’t have to think too hard before answering.

But if I asked you what your dreams are, would you be able to answer?

Is there anything you would want to leave this world with when eventually you leave? Is there anything you would want to do, apart from making a billion dollars, which realistically is not going to happen to all of us? What would you want to be remembered for?

A friend of mine used to say “dreaming is too much hard work and some of us are lazy.” And I understand that not everyone wants to change the world; not everybody wants to cure cancer or walk on the moon.

Some of us are content with going to work daily and coming back and eating and sleeping. It is not a crime.  As long as you’re happy and content that way. But there are some of us who want more – and I’m talking beyond financial recompense. We dream and desire and aspire to lengths and leaps further than we can see with our naked eyes. So we close our physical eyes and open the mental ones wider than thought possible. We flex our brain muscles to look beyond what we know and what has been done before – an attempt to bridge the ‘then-and-now’ gap.

We dream wide awake.

For those of us dreamers, the ones who want to be the next whatever-they-choose-to-be, what are we doing about the dreams? I know how hard it is to dream, especially in a country like Nigeria where it seems as though everything is created to work against you and your desire to go further than the norm, but it is not impossible.

I ask again, what does your dream look like?

Have you seen it clearly; enough to be able to explain it in two five-word sentences? Does it keep you awake, tossing and turning, and constantly fixated on that point just above the head of whomever you happen to be talking to at the point it happens?

The only thing I ask of myself and whoever I get a chance to share with is: whichever way you choose to live your life, just make sure you’re giving the best you have.

Nothing else will do.

I haven’t died before; and I do not plan to anytime soon, but I look forward to the time I will be able to say “I have given my all; I don’t have anything else to offer.” I have no regrets; at least not at the moment, because I do not let doubt and fear stop me. I do whatever I think I should do – and I’m talking as far as creating and doing and following my passion. Why else am I here?

So I suggest that whatever you find yourself in, make sure you’re giving a 101%; make sure you’re giving it everything you have because anything else wouldn’t do. There’s just no point in doing something averagely, especially when you know for a fact that you can do better.

Anything worth doing at all…

That’s all.
